The birthstone for September is Sapphire. According to the Gemological Institute of America “the term sapphire usually refers to the blue variety of corundum (ruby is the red variety), this birthstone comes in a rainbow of other colors. “Sapphire” comes from the Greek word sappheiros and blue sapphire is one of the most popular colored stones.

Sapphire is the third hardest gemstone, which makes it ideal for use in jewelry that you can wear every day. Fancy sapphires are often found in yellow, orange, green, brown, purple and violet hues.

In England a blue sapphire is often used for an engagement ring, most famously in the ring Princess Charles gave to Diana. The ring was later given to Kate Middleton by Prince William.
